Activities
There is so much more to Saint Mary School than the 8-3 school day!
Faith-Based Activities
Students attend Mass each Wednesday, strengthening their faith and practicing public speaking and other skills. There is also a family Mass on one Sunday per month, which brings together our community.
The school has a wonderful Prayer Partner program, which partners older and younger kids. On Mass days, the older students come to pick up the littles, and they attend Mass together. They also do activities together throughout the year, building bonds and learning new skills.
Being Downtown and Travelling Further Afield
Saint Mary School enjoys a rich partnership with Downtown Janesville, and you will see our school represented at many community events. Being downtown provides so many wonderful opportunities for hands-on learning with thoughtfully planned, curriculum-based activities.
We visit the downtown outdoor fitness center, the town square, and several of our downtown learning lab partners like Johnson Bank, WCLO, and the Gazette.
In partnership with Downtown Janesville, students participate in the city’s annual Downtown Trick or Treat celebration and Jolly Jingle.
Our students take advantage of our proximity to the Janesville Performing Arts Center and participate in or attend performances like Elf, Shrek Junior, and The Rockin’ Tale of Snow White.
We are proud to participate in the Veteran’s Day tribute at Traxler Park each year.
We also strengthen our curriculum through field trips to the Wisconsin State Capitol, the Discovery Center in Madison, the nearby fire station, local apple orchards, zoos, the bowling alley, Busy Barn, and pumpkin patches.
Lego Team
FIRST LEGO League guides youth through STEM learning and exploration. Students participate in research, connect with community members, and build robots while focused on solving the problems presented for all teams in the Challenge season.
Student Council
Students from grades 2 through 8 have the opportunity to participate in student council. This is a great way for our students to engage with their peers and learn effective leadership skills. Our past student council boards have raised money for, among other organizations, Project 16:49, which is a local organization serving homeless teens.
School Traditions
We also have several deep-rooted traditions in which we love to involve the community. Saint Mary School hosts the annual Steeple Chase, a community fun run. Students participate, volunteer, and cheer on the runners! We also hold an annual Salad Luncheon and Spaghetti Dinner. All of these activities are community-builders and raise funds for the school.
Athletics
Saint Mary School promotes health and activity in body as well as in mind.
Our teams participate in the Southern Wisconsin Catholic Grade School League (schools in Janesville, Beloit, and Fort Atkinson), which promotes sound physical, psychological, and social development of student athletes in an atmosphere of Christian values.
Student athletes develop sports-related skills and good health habits, learn discipline, dedication, leadership, and self-control, and practice cooperation, competition, and good sportsmanship. Other than boys’ and girls’ basketball in grades 5-8, teams are coed.
Saint Mary School students compete in the following:
